How does your site stack up? What opportunities are you missing?
Websites are a vital part of most businesses today. It was about 10 years ago, Amazon research found that for every 100ms of latency (slowness is site speed load time) cost them 1% in sales. Google also found that a .5 second load time decrease dropped traffic by 20%.
A 2017 Akamai study shows that every 100-millisecond delay in website load time can hurt conversion rates by 7% – that is a significant drop in sales. This goes to show that things aren’t getting any easier for online businesses as user experience is becoming critical to e-commerce success.
Google trained a deep neural network – a computer system modeled on the human brain and nervous system – with a large set of bounce and conversion data. The neural net, which had a 90% prediction accuracy, found that as page load time goes from 1 second to 10 seconds, the probability of a mobile site visitor bouncing increases 123%. Similarly, as the number of elements – text, titles, images – on a page goes from 400 to 6,000, the probability of conversion drops 95%.
No matter how you dice it, faster is better. Google found that 79% of pages were over 1MB, 53% over 2MB and 23% over 4MB. One in particular caught our attention: it came in at a whopping 16MB.
Latency (SLOW WEBSITES) is not an option any more. The less interactive a site becomes, the more likely users are to simply click away to a competitor’s site. Latency is the mother of interactivity.
