Digital Marketing: Then And Now

May 24, 2017

Digital marketing has been used to promote and leverage business services and products since the early 90s. Just take a minute to think back to ads presented to you in the 90s and compare it to the most recent ad you have seen today. Are you visualizing any changes and differences?

The online marketing game changes every second of every day with how people are searching, consuming and purchasing what businesses have to offer online. I want to bring this to your attention because, as a digital marketer and someone who was born in the late 80s, the Internet has been a part of my life since pretty much the day I was born.

I can remember some of the first purchases I made online with eBay in the early 2000s and I was so excited that I could get on my computer and order pretty much anything within my budget as a teenager. The entire process was great from the moment I made the order to receiving the confirmation email to tracking the package to my doorstep. It literally made my days up to the day the package came and then I was back on the site looking for more stuff!

Just the idea of being able to buy online intrigued me to the core. Early on, Pierre Omidyar understood the revolutionizing technology of digital marketing and became a billionaire at the age of 31 after eBay’s IPO went live to the world. All of this was made possible through digital marketing and understanding the consumer’s path to purchase.

Present Day Path To Purchase With Digital Marketing

When you think of shopping online, which brand instantly comes to your mind? Amazon? eBay? 8 out 10 of you will say Amazon. The reason for this is – from the beginning, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder, has understood 2 things very well: customer service and digital marketing. As the masses have adopted online shopping at a proliferate rate since Amazon’s infancy in 1994, the company has put their time, money and energy right back into those 2 things it does so well.

I break these two companies down in this article to point out that no matter which business you are in, big or small, if you market in the year you live in and use the tools available to you as a business owner, you can to continue to capture market share and keep your guest, clients and users coming back for more and more. Plus, you’ll be doing this all while adding so much value that they tell everyone they know about it!

Are You Doing Digital Marketing? What Can You Do Better?

If you’re in business in 2017, you have an audience and that audience has made a purchase online. You have customers and future customers who follow you and enjoy doing business with you. Whether it be that they pass by your brick and mortar location or on the way to work to drop their kids off at daycare, your business has made an impression on them somewhere down the line. Would you rather someone pass by and wonder what’s in your store or say, “I’ve seen that store while searching through Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Google” and take action to find out more about what you offer? After experiencing your business online, they have sold themselves on doing business with you.

This is just one example of what digital marketing can bring to the table for your business, all while tracking each source and metric that brings awareness and buying intent to your products and services.
