Over the last 5 years, I have worked with many businesses who have goals to grow and serve more people through utilizing their website and online presence. In this article, I am going to bring attention to exactly how you can begin converting those website visitors into actual paying customers.
Have you ever walked into a store that caught your attention and as you are looking around you are never greeted or asked if you can be helped by anyone? Then you look up near the register area and there is no one there. Though this type of experience is not super common in a brick and mortar business, it absolutely happens. In relation to online stores, it is normal for so many businesses in many industries.
How Do You Know if You’re Communicating Enough?
Great questions solve great problems. In today’s online world, websites are the first impression for many businesses when starting a relationship with their potential customers. When someone lands on your website, there are only so many ways they got there. They were either marketed to through an ad or some type of distribution channel Facebook, Instagram, Email Marketing, SMS Marketing, SEO, etc. or they came to your website directly through www.yourbrand.com. Either way, they are coming and have some type of intent to do business with a business like yours or they would not have landed there. Let’s face it – algorithms are insanely smart and their job is to give people what they want with instant gratification, so remember that the next time you’re looking at a traffic report to your website. Maybe you are seeing hundreds or thousands of visitors that come to your website, but you’re asking yourself “why didn’t I have hundreds or thousands of new customers last month?”… It’s ok, I am here to HELP! With your website, there should be a strategy in place to give these potential customers a chance to begin receiving information that they value. Let’s go more in depth on this below:
Starting the Conversation
Ask and you shall receive. People are more comfortable putting their contact information out there than they ever have been before. WHY? Because they value what comes next. When a business understands the value of a potential customer and starts a conversation around that value, it’s a win-win for the person who gives their contact information to the business to receive what?? You guessed it! Information they value from the business.This is where the conversation between the business and the potential customer happens. So let’s walk through this with an example. You own a business and have a website that is receiving what you consider to be a good amount of traffic each month to your website. Each month, you are seeing traffic growth to your website, but when you run reports on new customers or sales in your business, you are not hitting the goals you have set. Better yet, you realize that very little of your new customers/sales are coming from your website traffic. We hear this all the time! This can be fixed with the right strategy and distribution system.
Converting the Conversation to Customers
The bread and butter. Being able to turn a conversation into a relationship with your customer online is something that can and will change your business forever. First step is to understand WHO your customer is. Understanding this can and will pay dividends to a business long term. Next is understanding WHERE your customer is at. Understanding where they are in terms of online activity is huge. Do they spend time on Facebook, are they searching on Google for things that are relevant to your business and product, do they open your emails? Next is figuring out WHAT they want. This is so important to understand. For example: Do they want specials? Do they want more information to learn about your product? Or do they just want to speak with someone to help make a final decision? Lastly, once you understand the WHO, WHERE and WHAT comes the easy part: GIVE them what they want.
It is very easy to serve a customer when you truly know what they want and have done the research on their values.
